This has successfully developed from a 50-film event to a 200-film festival with an audience of 47,000 in 1997 and is now a major film event in the region. Dedicated to the promotion of Asian filmmakers for programmers from film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam and Vancouver.
With the growing interest in filmmaking, NAC announced its support to promote film as a core art form in January 1997. The scope of assistance covers the provision of scholarships and bursaries for film studies, recognising outstanding film makers for arts awards, funding the SIFF and promotion of film appreciation among the young through the Art Education Programme in schools.
An increasing number of young filmmakers are emerging in the annual SIFF. In 1997, three feature films were entered by Singapore film directors to compete for the Silver Screen Award. All three enjoyed successful commercial runs at cinemas. Eric Khoo's first film Mee Pok Man (launched in 1996 SIFF) has been invited to participated in more than 40 film festivals around the world. His second feature 12 Storeys has participated in Cannes Festival.
With the trend of theatre artists crossing over to film such as Ong Ken Sen in Army Daze and Kuo Pao Kun in TCS television movie Ah Gong Bak Kut Teh, the future of the Singapore film industry holds promise.
