Singapore has one of the highest
Internet penetration rates in the world. As at May 2007, the
number of broadband internet subscriptions exceeded 2.4 million,
reaching a penetration rate of 69.2 per cent. The phenomenal
growth and popularity of the Internet in Singapore arises from
the government's recognition of the ability of the Internet
to offer unique opportunities and benefits, and its efforts
to promote the use of Information Technology at home, work and
the schools.
The Media Development Authority (MDA) supports the development
of the Internet in Singapore and oversees the regulation of
Interent content in the country. MDA adopts a balanced and
light-touch approach to ensure that minimum standards are
set for the responsible use of the Internet while giving maximum
flexibility to the industry players to operate. MDA also encourages
industry self-regulation and public education efforts to complement
its light-touch regulatory approach.
