  Print Media

The media in Singapore is free to present its views and opinions without prejudice or interference from the government. However, the government does insist from the publications/TV stations that circulate/broadcast in Singapore, the right of reply to any news story/item about Singapore that it feels is inaccurate, distorted or incomplete. The news organisation in question may be asked to provide space or possibly airtime to present Singapore point of view.

The local print media, comprises ten daily newspapers in the four main languages. The five English language newspapers are The Straits Times, Business Times, The New Paper (an afternoon tabloid) and TODAY. TODAY is currently distributed free to readers. The Chinese language newspapers comprise a morning daily, Lianhe Zaobao, two evening newspapers, Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News, and My Paper, which is distributed free to readers. Two other newspapers in Malay and Tamil respectively are Berita Harian and Tamil Murasu. To keep up with the increasing use of Internet by readers, six of the ten newspapers have Internet-based editions. These online newspapers are available at the AsiaOne Web site (www.asiaone.com.sg).

There are about 5,500 foreign newspapers and magazines circulating in Singapore. About 190 newspapers are available, ranging from American and British newspapers to Thai, Korean, Japanese and German ones. The magazines include international news and lifestyle magazines, such as Newsweek, TIME, Vogue, Elle and FHM.
