The media in Singapore is free to present its
views and opinions without prejudice or interference from
the government. However, the government does insist from the
publications/TV stations that circulate/broadcast in Singapore,
the right of reply to any news story/item about Singapore
that it feels is inaccurate, distorted or incomplete. The
news organisation in question may be asked to provide space
or possibly airtime to present Singapore point of view.
The local print
media, comprises ten daily newspapers in the four main languages.
The five English language newspapers are The Straits Times, Business Times, The New Paper (an afternoon tabloid) and
TODAY. TODAY is currently
distributed free to readers. The Chinese language newspapers
comprise a morning daily, Lianhe
Zaobao, two evening newspapers, Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min
Daily News, and My Paper, which is distributed free to readers.
Two other newspapers in Malay and Tamil respectively are Berita
Harian and Tamil
Murasu. To keep up with the increasing use of Internet by
readers, six of the ten newspapers have Internet-based editions.
These online newspapers are available at the AsiaOne Web site
(www.asiaone.com.sg).
There are about 5,500 foreign newspapers and magazines circulating
in Singapore. About 190 newspapers are available, ranging
from American and British newspapers to Thai, Korean, Japanese
and German ones. The magazines include international news
and lifestyle magazines, such as Newsweek, TIME, Vogue, Elle
and FHM.
